Good to know
Sankat Mochan is believed to have been founded by the poet-saint Tulsidas. Devotees offer sindoor and sweets, and the temple hosts a well-known annual music festival.
Phones and bags are restricted inside. The temple sits close to Banaras Hindu University and Durga Temple, so it fits neatly into a south-city half day.
The temple is calm, surrounded by a small green garden. Devotees offer sindoor and sweets to Hanuman and the evening aarti has a distinct, lively rhythm. Tuesdays and Saturdays are busiest.
Sankat Mochan is about 15 minutes by car from Assi Ghat and 25 to 30 minutes from the city centre. Cars can park near the entrance.
Durga Temple, Tulsi Manas Temple and the Banaras Hindu University campus are very close, which makes a neat half-day in south Varanasi.
