Good to know
Dashashwamedh is the central ghat, a short walk from Kashi Vishwanath Temple. The evening aarti here draws thousands of people and is the signature experience of a Varanasi trip.
You can stand on the steps, take a seat on a platform near the front, or watch from a boat anchored a little off the ghat. The boat view is calmer and gives you the full scene with the lamps reflected on the water.
Keep valuables secure in the crowd, agree boat prices before boarding and avoid feeding the offerings sellers who approach aggressively.
Dashashwamedh Ghat is a short walk from Godowlia crossing. Cars stop at Godowlia or the nearest permitted point and you walk through the lanes. From Assi Ghat you can also take a boat directly to Dashashwamedh.
The evening aarti is a choreographed ritual with several priests, large lamps, incense, conch shells and chanting. It lasts around 45 minutes. The atmosphere is devotional and festive.
