Visiting Kashi Vishwanath Temple: what to know

About the temple

Kashi Vishwanath is dedicated to Shiva as lord of the universe and sits at the heart of the old city. The current temple dates from the late 18th century, and the area around it was redeveloped as the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, which links the temple complex directly to the ghats.

How to visit

Mobile phones, bags and leather items are not allowed inside, so leave them at your hotel or in the lockers near the entrance. Arrive early, dress modestly and expect security checks. Online darshan slots can reduce waiting time on busy days.

Combine with

Most visitors walk from Dashashwamedh Ghat or arrive by boat and enter through the ghat-side gate. Annapurna Devi temple and Gyan Vapi are close by.

How to reach

You can walk from Dashashwamedh Ghat through the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, or arrive by car to the nearest parking and walk the last stretch. Cars cannot enter the old-city lanes. E-rickshaws and walking are the usual ways to cover the final distance.

Darshan options

  • General darshan through the Corridor queue.
  • Paid or priority darshan and aarti arrangements are offered by the temple trust. Use only official channels and check current rules.
  • Early morning on weekdays is usually the calmest time.
  • Mondays, Shravan month, Mahashivratri and festivals are very crowded.

Rules and etiquette

  • Leave phones, cameras, bags, electronics and leather items in the car, hotel or lockers near the entrance.
  • Carry a valid ID if requested.
  • Follow the instructions of temple staff and security.
  • Offerings are simple: flowers, bael leaves, water or milk from approved counters.

Nearby places to combine

Annapurna Devi temple, Kaal Bhairav temple, Sankat Mochan and the ghats are all within a short drive or walk. A boat ride from Assi can end at Dashashwamedh within walking distance of the temple.
